Chapter Nine

Ghost guns. That topic hadn’t been anywhere close to what Maggie had expected to find. In their small town of Fredericksburg, she hadn’t even seen a ghost gun, although she had been aware of their existence.

While she was glad to have something to go on, she was mad at Tate all over again.

Rather than going to the authorities, he’d sent the information to her, hidden within legal documents. Way to drag her into his mess. And okay, she was a cop and fully capable of protecting herself, something Tate had probably known.

But what about Laney? And her mom?

Just more proof that Tate had never truly considered Laney his daughter. How that was possible when he’d spent the first few years of her life with her, she had no clue. Glancing at Dallas’s grim expression, she knew it was something he never would have done.

Even if Laney hadn’t been his daughter biologically, he was the type of man who would put his life on the line to protect any child. Hadn’t he dedicated his life to serving his country? Quite the opposite of how Tate had taken a darker path.

One that had gotten him ruthlessly murdered.

“Follow me back to the SUV,” Dallas said. “Let’s stay quiet too, okay?”

Laney looked scared but nodded. Romeo stayed right at her daughter’s side as they headed down the stairs to the tourist shop.

Instead of going out through the front door, though, Dallas took the rear door. The hot August heat blasted their faces as they stepped outside. They’d left the SUV a few blocks down, and Dallas swept his gaze right and left as they walked toward it.

Maggie clutched the envelope to her chest, keeping a keen eye out for anything suspicious too. Sweat pooled in the hollow of her neck, making her wish she’d pulled her hair back into its usual ponytail. That’s what happened when you allowed vanity to mess with your head. Stupid idea to try to look nice for Dallas.

They reached the SUV without issue. While Dallas put Romeo in the back, she made sure her mother and Laney were settled too. Soon, they were on their way.

“Are we still getting tacos from Mateo’s?” Laney asked, trepidation underscoring her tone.

The restaurant was on the main thoroughfare through town. Maggie glanced at Dallas who gave a slight shake of his head, then turned to look at her daughter. “I think we’ll have to wait a bit, sorry. But we’ll find something to eat soon, okay?”

Laney’s lower lip quivered. “A-are we in danger again?”

Her mother put a reassuring hand on Laney’s arm. Maggie managed a smile, wishing she could hug the little girl. “We’re safe, and nothing is going to happen to you. We would just like to get to the new house as soon as possible. You’re still interested in swimming, right?”

Even the mention of her favorite pastime didn’t cheer Laney up. “I guess.”

“I know Romeo would like to swim,” Dallas added. “I think there’s a burger place just a few miles from here.
